Code of ethics

My code of ethics is developed from the recommendations of both the International Coach Federation and The Coaches Training Institute.

I will conduct myself in a way that reflects well on the coaching profession.

I will establish clear agreements with my clients and honour these.

I will obey the law.

I will not overstate my competence or experience.

I will make sure that my clients understand the process of coaching and the nature of our agreements.

I will not make guarantees about what the coaching will achieve as the results lie in my client.

I will regularly check in with my clients to ensure that the coaching is working for them and to remind them of the ongoing opportunity to re-design the coaching relationship.

I will refer clients to other professionals when I do not have the competence to deal with their request or situation.

I will hold all client information confidential unless authorised by the client to share such information.

I will only make a client’s name available to others with prior written consent.

If I foresee a conflict of interests I will tell the client at the earliest possible time and will solicit their views on an acceptable solution and provide the opportunity for the client to end the relationship or put a veto on discussing particular issues in the coaching sessions.

If I become aware of illegal activity – particularly of a violent or sexual nature – during the coaching relationship, I reserve the right to contact the relevant authorities and break confidentiality.

I will not accept payment by results.

When working with a company, I will always hold a client’s information confidential and will make this a condition of working with the company.

I will coach clients regardless of their race, religion, sex or sexual orientation and in line with any anti-discriminatory law in the UK.

I will manage my own health and well-being as best I can, to ensure that I am present in my coaching interactions and able to give full value to my clients.

I will be open, positive and flexible around feedback from clients, always trusting that the client understands their needs best.
